Hi Ari, it was so good to get your update and detailed post on Friday, and to see and read your words.
And while I can totally understand the post battle and euphoric burnout and fatigue, I just wonder that democratic Koreans should not lose sight of the fact as to how they mobilized and managed to prevent another military dictatorship and martial law in a peaceful way. First Time Ever, I think.
A Big Signal.
I used to think that a lot of the plot stuff in K dramas was sort of rather over dramatized, but now realize it is not .
Dismantling the embedded structural inequalities and abuse and corruption in your political, judicial, prosecutorial, police and armed forces, and even education and health is a very hard task.Another journey.
You may have cut off the head of this Hydra, but its body and tail remain.
So called in camera court hearings, are usually held for three reasons;
One. To protect some one from the rigor of the trial. This could be well intentioned, or not
Two. Like in post WW2 Soviet trials, to just expedite political decisions and execute or exile to the Gulags, or
Three . To obscure and misdirect and give relief or benefit to the accused.
I hope people use their vote well, next time.
Is voting mandatory in SK? It is here; so v high registration to vote rates and actual voting participation. And there is The Democracy Sausage Sizzle in the morning to encourage at larger polling booths.
Our Federal Election is on this Saturday. and could be tight contest. I will be out supporting our Green Party with my daughter on the day. Regards.
Hi 밧티, thank you so much for your kind offer and support!
Just to clarify, the pledge button and the price you see were set automatically by Substack—I didn’t set it myself.
Actually, I don’t have plans to start a paid newsletter, mainly because of a technical issue (Substack’s payment system isn’t available in my country).
So you absolutely don’t need to pledge! Your message alone means a lot to me. 감사합니다!
이아리 씨! 보고 싶었어요! It's so good to hear from you again--I've been waiting for this update, but expected it to be more ebullient. But of course you are exhausted and traumatized and in great need of rest. Right now, every week here in America is eternal and exhausting, and even if it could all be made better tomorrow, I would need ages to recover.
Your description of the rot running deep immediately rang true for me. Your post did a great job of communicating the struggles ahead and all the things in place to thwart the proper justice South Koreans deserve. That they are making the trial itself private is infuriating.
Take your time recovering! Treat yourself and your family well! Thank you for the update!
안녕하세요, 제이슨님! 저도 보고 싶었어여 ㅋㅋ Thank you so much for your supportive message. It truly warmed my heart.❤️
I deeply empathize with American protesters—I see news of the protests here too, and my heart goes out to all of you fighting through exhaustion and injustice.
In our case, the movement to impeach Yoon actually began right after he was elected. It took three long years to reach this point—not just the four months since the martial law declaration.
I sincerely hope Americans can see a much faster result than we did. You all deserve it.
And yes! The two thumbs up from the sign language interpreter went viral here too! It gave many of us a much-needed smile that day.
Please take good care of yourself too. Sending you lots of solidarity and strength from South Korea 🫰
Keep up the good work! ❤️

I want to pledge, but your tariffs are too high for me. Can I pledge €35 a year? 감사합니다! 밧티 (Amsterdam, the Netherlands)

Oh! and I love that in the picture of the impeachment announcement, the sign language interpreter is giving the two thumbs up! So great!
