ㄱ ㅅ ㄱ ㅅ for such an entertaining post! I will by trying this Ex-Boyfriend Toast out soon, I think! I don't know how I never thought to put those two things together, but I expect my wife and I will both love it!

What is the verb you use in Korean to cook something in the microwave? We commonly use "nuke" or "zap" or "cook" or even as you said in your post, "microwave." What are the most common verbs in Korean to describe that action? In the text exchange, it doesn't look like the ex-boyfriend even used a verb.

Hi Jason! ㄱㅅㄱㅅ for such a sweet comment! I hope you and your wife love the Ex-Boyfriend Toast—it’s surprisingly addictive for how simple it is.

That’s a great question about the microwave verb. In Korean, the most common way to say “to microwave something” is:

전자레인지에 돌리다

전자레인지 means “microwave” (the noun), and 돌리다 is a verb meaning “to operate a machine” or “to spin.”

You’ll often hear Koreans say things like:

“이거 전자레인지에 좀 돌려줘.”

(Can you microwave this for me?)

And yes—just like you noticed in the chat, the ex-boyfriend didn’t actually use a verb. He simply said 렌지에 10초 (“10 seconds in the microwave”). 렌지 is a casual shorthand for 전자레인지, and it’s totally normal in texting. So you can either omit the verb like he did, or use 돌리다 for a fuller sentence.

Hope that helps! Have a great weekend! 👋

고마워요! 설명을 잘해요! That's great to know!

While I have you, I have another question for you, even though this one is quite off the topic. I know that you are a fan of rap and hip hop music, and I'm wondering if there is any feminist Korean hip hop or rap artists that you enjoy listening to?

칭찬 ㄱㅅㄱㅅ, Jason!

Actually, I mostly listen to American hip-hop and rap, rather than Korean ones. And when it comes to Korean music, I tend to enjoy more old-school artists like Cho Yong-pil or Choi Baek-ho, or just the more recent K-pop idol songs. My recent favorites are TWS and ILLIT.

As far as I know, there aren’t any widely known feminist Korean hip-hop artists, at least not in the mainstream scene. So I’m afraid I can’t help much on that front.

But if you ever discover someone interesting, I’d love to hear your recommendation too!

Hi Ari, thought I had replied to this your post a long while back, but a bit distracted by second time Covid and a follow up extra mycoplasma chest infection. And isolated for so long

Cheese and jam have always been a big combo in my family; so immediate appeal. While we have a lot of great local cheeses and jams, paired off Bonne Maman ( a big French competitor to St Dalfour here in supermarkets) Wild Blueberry Conserve and the Danish soft cheese,, Blue Castello (which I love so much), according to the directions. A Good Job !

And the subtlety and nuance of language.

Was largely able to keep up with SK elections due to Nikkei Asia.

But why have an election vote on a weekday ? It must reduce voter availability. All our elections are held on a Saturday, and voting is compulsory for all adults.

After the hard travail in the defense of democracy, let us pray that you all will have a decent new government. You deserve it.

And echoing sort of Jason or a parallel reply; putting together some things for a young Indian friend about XX Hip Hop and Rap in Oz. Maybe you may find of interest. So I will send to you as well.

ROW doesn't really know how vibrant and diverse our music scene is. Be Safe as you vote.

Hi Cristoffa,

Thanks so much for your warm message, as always. 💛 I’m so sorry to hear about your second bout with COVID and the mycoplasma chest infection—that sounds incredibly tough. I hope you’re taking good care of yourself and on the mend.

About the election—yes, the voting system here is definitely a topic of conversation! Early voting was held on two weekdays last week, and normally at least one day would be a Saturday, but this time it wasn’t. That sparked a lot of complaints and even conspiracy theories about trying to lower voter turnout. Voting here isn’t compulsory—it’s voluntary—and usually only about 75% of people vote in presidential elections. I have to admit, I envy your system where every adult has to vote.

The election day itself is actually tomorrow. I’m feeling both excited and nervous at the same time. I hope everything goes smoothly and safely, and that we can finally have a decent new government. Thanks so much for your prayers and your kindness—it means a lot.

I’ll try listening to the hip hop music you recommended. And I’ll bring a good news about my country this week! Stay safe and take care.

Hi Ari, I think we are on the same time zone or close to it , at least. So polling stations soon to close, I imagine, and then the wait.

You are rather special to me, if I haven’t said it ever before, as my Substack Ground Zero.

Eternal thanks for all the dialogue, and the recipes. Feel a bit slack, as I am largely mono lingual ( a bit of residual French), but still enjoy the discourse eg your last with Jason. A younger friend trying to entice me to attend Alliance Francais with her, but she is v adept and fluent.

Had been putting together stuff about Oz female Hip Hop artists to send and it it is there but just can’t find it.

So and not a bad thing, to go back to Hip hop, Rap

Hadn't entirely finished!

Origins here from a band called the Hill Top Hoods; about 20 yrs my junior, so a still a bit elder now. Haha.

There is a good Wiki bio to read;https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hilltop_Hoods

And perhaps their or one of. best songs ;https://tonedeaf.thebrag.com/the-10-best-hilltop-hoods-songs-critics-picks/list/1-fifty-in-five--hilltop-hoods/

Hope these links work so you have some distraction.

And to tantalize with young and so cool OZ XX talent; Tkay Maidza, Sampa the Great and Tash Sultana (whom I met a few times late at night in her Melbourne busking days - such an incredible energy; big on the loop).

Trying to find a site to learn of the election results, and a great song by Bic Runga, bursting in, called Sway; Bic is Maori/ Chinese Malay heritage, and an amazing voice and person.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi Again. Some local reporting re your SK on our ABC;

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-06-03/lee-jae-myung-wins-south-korean-election/105373314?utm_campaign=abc_news_web&utm_content=link&utm_medium=content_shared&utm_source=abc_news_web

Am listening quite a bit to some of your oldie music that you reffed; v cool, and the artists only a few years older than me, actually.

And , I am pretty well recovered. Sort of bad for about 10 days or so, but good now, and back walking well.

Will find my send articles re female Oz hip hop and rap; my listen is that they are cool and not gangsta or misogynistic etc.

But you have a few of my favs to chase up if you want. Tkay is sort of special as she is is from Zim.

Be Good.

Hi Ari, I am good now. Sort of down for the count for about 5 - 6 days, but then a persistent harsh cough that sounded terrible and embarrassing. So seem to have avoided more long term COVID things.

Be interested to know what the overall voter turnout will have been.

Still see i haven’t sent the sort of Oz female hip hop and rap resume, and now have two more friends asking for it.

So, after I reply to your most recent post, I will complete and send. Regards.
