Ari - thank you for sharing these thoughts. I am in awe of the South Koreans who are standing for the rights of freedom, including YOU! The night of martial law, I was watching from afar (US), so worried that Yoon’s illegal declaration would just become reality. And now, waiting, waiting for the verdict to come down, so stressful. The western media has stopped covering what is happening in S Korea, so I didn’t know that the demonstrations against Yoon are even bigger now. Thank you for not only the current news, but also your insights into the history that precedes this moment.

I just bought your book on kofi & can’t wait to read it!

And I’m going to try both the tofu gim and cabbage gimbap. Thanks for the recipes!!!

Hi Taryn! Thank you so much for giving my book a try—it really means a lot to me 🥹 The profit from book sales is helping cover my travel expenses to attend protests, so you’re indirectly contributing to my country’s democracy!

I guess U.S. and Western media may be focused on domestic and other international news these days, which might be why they’ve stopped covering what’s happening here. Many Koreans are starting to accept that this could be a long fight, so I think it’s important not to grow numb or tired of the situation.

Hope I can bring some good news soon! Have a great day 👋

ADMAZED AT YOUR PERSONAL TENACITY AND OF YOUR FELLOW CITIZENS, So Much.

Longest ever use of upper caps ! in a message.

And re health issues you really don't need that much salt at all as the vinegar and sugar take on the cabbage curing and even sugar can be a bit less, if you wait a bit longer.

And sort of recognizing different 60s cultural marketing as i am helping my soon to be 93 yr old mum tidy up things. A series of kimbap mats sold as place and pot mats'

And, Your Grandmother's funeral story reminds me of a few of my own, to share later.

And the ongoing Massive Demos.

So Brave and Strong, but not well reported outside SK or local I think and should be.

Your v palpable and visual story so good, and the song ,"March for the Beloved". WOW.

Your military much more complicit than they have admitted to date obviously, with all the body bag and coffin bag requests in preparation . And should explain detail of orders and be held accountable. No "Nuremberg defense" that just following orders, or that it is classified.

Stay Brave But Careful, and On Your Side, Always.

And now see the glaring miss -spell in first word.

And, have to admit was quite late and didn’t know caps were on , and then thought, but it does express the strength of my sentiment.

And, this is serious, was trying to see how a nation’s people, or a section of it, as a group, could be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. It is a bit “closed shop” as I now find out, and quite white US and Euro male dominated. But will explore further. I can be quite tenacious also.

And glad to know you may be having at least a less frenetic weekend in your hometown, but local politics and other demographics can effect opinion a lot and v differently. So do “read the room” a bit.

Hope this is also going to Jason.

Hi Cristoffa! Thanks, as always, for your support!

Kimbap is one of my favorite foods. There are so many kimbap places across the country, but I’ve heard that many are shutting down due to skyrocketing vegetable and gim prices. Cucumber prices especially have gone through the roof, and now a lot of shops are leaving them out—which makes me sad because I think cucumber is essential in kimbap.

It was kind of you to remind me to read the room. My hometown is actually one of the most far-right areas in the country, with many loyal supporters of the president. I heard that some try to start fights during protests, but thankfully nothing like that happened yesterday. The protest was peaceful—happy but angry—just like the one in Seoul last weekend.

I hope I’ll have some good news to share next week. 👋

Ari, glad you are OK after your home town trip.

Guessed right (wing) as to possible concern and glad you and family alright. Imagine still difficult.

And have a story a bit less severe , to tell, from my youth (sort of 70 - 80 s) in my state , but mostly about marching, police state and corruption (gambling and prostitution) , but not insurrection. And some lingers on still actually, in various ways.
